O365 Co-edit a Word document with teammates

When you have a document that you're working on with your teammates, co-editing in Word Online comes in handy. Watch the video to see how this works in the browser on a computer, and scroll down to see how to perform this task across a variety of devices.

 

Try it!

The following procedure describes how to perform this task using Word Online in a web browser on a computer. However, you can use another device as well. See Specific "how to" instructions for your device.

IMPORTANT: Before you begin, make sure that make sure your document has been saved to an online location, such as OneDrive for Business, and that the document is shared with others. If you want to use our example document, you can download it here: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=723570, and then save it to your OneDrive for Business library.

To co-edit a Word document using Word Online

  1. Using the web browser on your device, go to http://portal.office.com and sign in to Office 365 for businessusing your work or school account.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • If the file you want to edit is yours, from either your home screen or the app launcher, choose OneDrive, and then select a Word document to open it in your browser window.

    • If someone shared a document with you and you want to edit that file, choose OneDrive, and then choose Shared with me. Then select document to open it in your browser window.

      (Our example is called Example document.docx.)

  3. On the Edit Document menu, choose Edit in Word Online.

  4. To see real-time co-authoring, ask one or more teammates to open the same document for editing on their devices. If your teammates are using Word 2016 or Word Online, you'll see their changes in real time.

 

Specific "how to" instructions for your device

Windows PC or tablet

To co-edit a Word document using Word Online on your Windows computer or tablet

  1. Using the web browser on your computer, go to http://portal.office.com and sign in to Office 365 for business using your work or school account.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • If the file you want to edit is yours, from either your home screen or the app launcher, chooseOneDrive, and then select a Word document to open it in your browser window.

    • If someone shared a document with you and you want to edit that file, choose OneDrive, and then choose Shared with me. Then select document to open it in your browser window.

      (Our example is called Example document.docx.)

  3. On the Edit Document menu, choose Edit in Word Online. Or, if you have Word 2016 installed, chooseEdit in Word.

  4. To see real-time co-authoring, ask one or more teammates to open the same document for editing on their devices. If your teammates are using Word 2016 or Word Online, you'll see their changes in real time.

Mac computer

To co-edit a Word document using Word Online on your Mac

  1. Using the web browser on your computer, go to http://portal.office.com and sign in to Office 365 for business using your work or school account.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • If the file you want to edit is yours, from either your home screen or the app launcher, click OneDrive, and then select a Word document to open it in your browser window.

    • If someone shared a document with you and you want to edit that file, click OneDrive, and then clickShared with me. Then click the document to open it in your browser window.

      (Our example is called Example document.docx.)

  3. On the Edit Document menu, choose Edit in Word Online.

  4. To see real-time co-authoring, ask one or more teammates to open the same document for editing on their devices. If your teammates are using Word 2016 or Word Online, you'll see their changes in real time.

Android phone or tablet

To co-edit a Word document using Word Online on your Android phone or tablet

  1. Using the web browser on your phone or tablet, go to http://portal.office.com and sign in to Office 365 for business using your work or school account.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • If the file you want to edit is yours, from either your home screen or the app launcher, chooseOneDrive, and then select a Word document to open it in your browser window.
